Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Who are the 99s? The 99s are an international not-for-profit organization started in 1929 by Amelia Earhart. Part of the mission of the organization is to provide aviation education in the community and preserve the unique history of women in aviation. For additional information go to the web site at www.ninety-nines.org.

  2. Who are EAA Chapter 9? The EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) was organized to promote the passion that people have for building and flying aircraft and to promote safety. For additional information go to the local chapter's web site at www. EAA9.org.

  3. Are there any age limitations? Each participant must be at least 16 (with parental permission) or over. Male or female.

  4. How long are the classes? Ground school is two hours on Friday night (7:00 – 9:00 pm) and two hours on Saturday morning (8:00 – 10:00 am).

  5. When will the flying take place? Flight time is scheduled for Saturday after the ground school and will finish on Sunday morning. If a rental aircraft is necessary, it is wise to schedule the aircraft for the entire weekend to assure its availability.

  6. How many hours total will I need to be there on those days? Two hours Friday night for ground school from 7:00 pm until 9:00 pm. Approximately six hours Saturday with two hours of ground school (and breakfast) beginning at 8:00 am and two hours of flying with the flight instructor plus breaks and lunch. Saturday will be completed by approximately 3:00 pm. Sunday is generally four hours, with two hours of flight instruction from 8:00 am until noon (with breakfast, lunch and breaks.)

  7. When do I get to eat? Food will be served Friday night (snacks/beverages) and Saturday and Sunday will include continental breakfast and lunch.

  8. How long will I be flying? Most instructors will limit each flying session to one hour and then come back to the facility for a break.

  9. Are the flight instructors qualified? All flight instructors are qualified to fly the specific aircraft they are assigned. They all hold current flight instructor certificates and meet all FAA requirements.

  10. Can my flying companion (spouse, friend, partner) fly with me? No. The intent of the program is to get the non-flying persons comfortable in their own aircraft. All of the flight instructors are aware that their students may have concerns and they will work with each one individually to help put them at ease. Ninety-Nine members will be available to help as well.

  11. What happens if the weather is not favorable for flying? Flights will take place only during those times scheduled when the weather is acceptable. If the full four hours of flight time are not possible, each participant can make arrangements with the flight instructor assigned to them. If the forecast is not favorable for the entire weekend, the event may be cancelled and all or a portion of the registration fee returned to the participant.

  12. Where do I get an airplane? The students will use their own aircraft or make arrangements for a rental aircraft. Aircraft are not provided by the event sponsors.

  13. What if I don’t live in or close to Columbus? There are several quality hotels in the OSU Don Scott Field area. (Contact Janie McIntire.) However, each participant must make sure that the aircraft is available to them when needed for flight instruction.

  14. Can I leave the aircraft overnight at the airport? The Ohio Department of Transportation Office of Aviation (ODOT) has a limited number of spaces available to be used overnight, both grass and hard surface. Because some have tie-downs and others do not, we suggest you bring your own tie-downs to be assured that your aircraft is safely tied down overnight. Call Janie McIntire for additional information.

  15. How do I get to the MedFlight facility?
    By ground:
The facility is located on the south side of Dublin-Granville Road behind the Beightler Armory (between Sawmill Road and Linworth.) There is a sign located on Dublin-Granville Road at the road to turn to come back to the facility. Park in the lot and proceed to the sidewalk on the right side of the building. We will meet in the training room on the ground floor.
By air: On landing at the OSU Don Scott airport, request taxi to the north side of the field, to the Ohio DOT Aviation parking. You can then walk across the tarmac to the MedFlight facility and enter through the MedFlight hangar.
