Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s August 13, 2003 meeting

Up, Up, and Away

Paula Rumbaugh and Amy Yersavich flew their Traveler to Stratford, Ontario, for two superb plays. The Taming of the Shrew in western dress was wonderful!  The trip back was less than perfect--IFR, a head wind…plus a port of entry about as far away from Canada as you can get!  But all’s well that ends well.

Barb Deeds flew to Blue Bird for lunch July 13th.  [Unfortunately, no one else did!  We’ll try to do better in informing members when an event has been canceled.  Sorry, Barb.  –Editor.]

Joanne Austin and Glen Sproat flew to Jacksonville, NC, Williamsburg, VA, and then to Ashboro, NC, visiting friends and family along the route. We flew around clouds and through rain and avoided towers along the way. What a way to travel on a week of vacation.

Janet Barnard has been working on a tailwheel rating.  She flew up to and back from Oshkosh, which was a great experience. T’was her first time landing and taking off on the tailwheeler on asphalt.  She also got some instrument time in; landing in Oshkosh was an exciting experience. Terri and Janet had an interesting experience setting up box markers in cornfields for an aerobatic competition.  [Ask them about it! – Editor.]

Terri Vrbancic has become immersed in the world of aerobatics, taking an intro course in a C150 Aerobat. then a Pitts S2B. She entered an aerobatic contest at Bolton and flew in a Christen Eagle II. Janet and I learned never to volunteer to put out aerobatic box markers again.  [Ah, there’s that reference to box markers again.  –Editor.]

Mary Biller is working on a tailwheel endorsement in a Supercub. Progress was interrupted due to a prop strike (not me). I assisted the mechanic in the installation of the new engine and prop and have been flying the cub for fun to break in the new engine.

Connie and Ray Copeland have had fun flying visitors from Holland. The visitors drove from New York City to Columbus, stayed 2 days then drove to Waukesha, WI. We flew. We all went to Oshkosh for a day. They drove for 2 days and we flew to Wichita, KS, in a few hours. From there we all flew to Raton, NM, where we introduced the Dutch to high desert country, wide-open spaces, volcanoes, Cimarron (the youngest boy had heard about the ghost in the St. James hotel), and Taos. We did an aerial tour past Colorado Springs and Pikes Peak, then back to Wichita for a few days of rest. Then they drove and we flew with the oldest boy to Columbus. We all had a good time. Marilynn Miller got to spend some time with them in Columbus. Marilynn had previously spent some time in Holland in their home.

Air Marking

Repainting of Madison Co. compass rose is delayed until the field is repaved.

Oct. 11 or Oct 25 was proposed to paint a compass rose at Greene Co. airport, with Oct. 12 or 26 as rain dates. The dates were tentative subject to the airport approval. Joanne Austin was to check on the date. Joanne Prater is to be contacted if you can help.

Janie McIntire and Paula Rumbaugh are going to the Fall Section meeting. Several other members expressed an interest in going to the business meeting.

Alice Jackson Scholarship fund

Janie asked someone to be contact person for the scholarship applicants while she was away this winter. She would deal with the applicant forms, posters, etc. Myra Jamison volunteered to help review the applications for correctness. The applications are due the end of December.

New rosters were handed out. The rosters will also be e-mailed to members with an e-mail address

Our meeting was adjourned to rejoin our guests.

Respectfully Submitted,

Constance Copeland, for
