Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s January 8, 2003 meeting

Up, Up, and Away

Marilynn Miller flew commercial for Christmas with son Ron and his wife.

Paula Rumbaugh took a friend and her daughter (10 years old) flying for their first small plane flight.  Mary Ann, the mother, had the winning bid for this flight, which was offered for auction at a United Way campaign.  They loved it despite low visibility.

Wendy Yost flew commercial to Florida to visit her mother.  Balloon flights that she normally tries to do on Christmas / New Year’s Day were unsuccessful due to weather, darn it!

Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order by Betty Obara, Chairman.

In attendance were Myra Jamison, Betty Obara, Marilynn Miller, Joanne Austin, Janet Barnard, Constance Copeland, Mary Biller, Paula Rumbaugh, Terri Vrbancic, Wendy Yost, Abby Rice, and Marjorie Anderson.

There were no minutes for the December meeting due to the holiday celebration and creation of cookie tins for the FBO’s and local Towers.

Betty Obara provided the current treasurer’s report.  Marjorie Anderson moved to accept the report as presented and Marilynn Miller seconded and so moved.

Old Business

·         ARC Update: The Dayton Flight Service manager will request equipment for weather stations to be available for pilots in the Women’s Air Race Classic stop-over in Dayton.

·         Ground School Instructor Certification:  There are currently six members who are interested in certification as a ground school instructor.  If anyone else is interested, please let Betty Obara know.

New Business

·         Creating a ground school for media reporters was discussed based on the presentation of Stew Hirsch, our program presenter.  Stew is an assignment editor for NBC’s Channel 4.  He stated, “Every one of us as pilots have the opportunity to educate the reporters.  Invite them to your events.  Take them up flying with you.  Explain what is going on in the airplane.”

Myra Jamison moved to adjourn the meeting and Marilynn Miller seconded and so moved.

Meeting adjourned.

Respectfully Submitted,

Marjorie Anderson, Secretary

Connie Copeland was our hostess for this meeting and served wonderful treats.  For our program,  Stew Hirsch spoke on the news media reporters’ ability to accurately report on aviation-related accidents and events.  According to Stew,  most reporters do not understand the basics of airplanes and therefore are unable to accurately report aviation accidents.  They also have difficulty obtaining access to information from NTSB or FAA.  They occasionally have difficulty obtaining access to video of crash sites, depending on the location of the closest NBC affiliate.  This was a most interesting presentation and provided us with ways to further educate the community about flight.
