Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s January 13, 2010 meeting
Up, Up, and Away:
Jann Bowne and her 49½ George flew commercial to St. Louis to visit their new
grandson Gabriel, born on January 4.
Meredith Frederick received her high-performance endorsement in a Cessna 210
after a fun afternoon of flying at OSU.
Myra Jamison flew by commercial plane to Colorado Springs to spend the month of
December with her daughter Carolyn. They spent time window shopping in old
Colorado City and Manitou Springs plus saw several movies.

Joan Mace, Charma Huddy, Jann Bowne, and Lori Robishaw.
Minutes of Previous Meeting: The minutes of the December meeting were
approved as distributed, with the note that the abbreviation for the

Report of Standing Committees:
- Airmarking:
• No report.
- Scholarship:
• Paula
R. reported that no applications had yet been submitted, but that the deadline
was still two days away. She said that $5,411.57 was in the CD for
scholarships and that it came due in March.
- Right Seat
Companion:
•
Meredith reported that
Doug Hammon, director of the OSU Airport, was interested in co-sponsoring the
postponed seminar with the chapter and EAA9. A new Women In Aviation student
chapter was being formed at OSU, and it could be another partner. Meredith
will be the chapter president.
-

Old Business:
- Nominating Committee:
•
No report.
-
Roster:
•
Paula R. graciously
volunteered to do an updated roster since the chapter secretary (guilty!) lost
track of doing it.
New Business:
- Doo-Dah Parade:
•
Do-Dah Parade: Jann did
some research on Columbus’s Doo-Dah Parade, which is held every July 4 in the
Short North, and would like the chapter to submit an entry. Lori initially
proposed that the chapter consider participating a couple of years ago, citing
her previous experience with the San Fernando Valley chapter in the Pasadena
parade. To be in the parade, we would “fly in formation” in our homemade
airplanes made of cardboard, trash cans, or whatever materials inspire. The
way it worked with SFV was as both a fund-raiser and a promotional vehicle to
heighten awareness of The 99s. Each person who participated was asked to raise
$50 (usually in five $10 donations) and each donor had their name painted on
the member’s airplane tail. We could have some airplane-making sessions at
someone’s hangar in the spring and could also have a few sessions of
“choreography” for marching in formation if we wish. For more info on
Columbus’s Doo-Dah Parade, go to
www.doodahparade.com. You can also check out
www.pasadenadoodahparade.info
to see photos of different kinds of parade entries. It’s sort of hard to
explain without visuals. Lori will try to bring her photos to future meetings,
and some SFV chapter photos follow on the next page.
Announcements:
-
Paula H. shared the sad news that North Central Section member Charlene
Falkenberg had passed away on January 10 at the age of 88. She was the longtime
editor of The Waypoint, a director of the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship
Fund, and racer in the Air Race Classic (formerly Powder Puff Derby), among her
many noteworthy accomplishments in aviation.
-
Jann brought in a copy of the latest issue of AOPA’s Flight Training magazine,
which had a nice article on Joan Mace.
-
Lori announced that Kathy Sullivan, who was the first woman to walk in space and
is currently on the faculty at Ohio State, will be inducted in the Women In
Aviation Pioneer Hall of Fame at their annual conference at the end of February
in Orlando.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 p.m.
Respectfully submitted by Lori Robishaw, Secretary
