The meeting was called to order by our president, Betty Obara.
Marilynn Miller introduced our guest, Joanne Austin, who flew to our meeting from Zenia, Ohio. Welcome, Joanne! It was a pleasure to meet you!
Correction to the minutes as distributed: “Marilynn Miller volunteered to be membership chairman for the next year.” The minutes were approved as amended.
Janie McIntire gave the treasurer’s report. The report was accepted as presented.
Old Business:
· Colorado Trip: The next Compass Rose is to be painted on the tarmac at Canon City Airport, Colorado. The trip dates are September 25 – October 2, 2002. Those 11 members going on the trip plan to stay at Pueblo West Hotel. We encourage all members to go! We have a lot of fun and provide a service to aviation as well.
· Sweat Shirts for sale: Paula Rumbaugh found 4 sweatshirts with aviation motif left over from a fund-raiser several years ago. Marilynn moved and Paula seconded. The motion was approved to sell these for $8.00 each.
· Janie reported that Bank One has agreed to provide us with a new account. They require two signatures to establish the account. Betty O’Bara and Janie McIntire will be the signees. After establishing the new account, Janie will close the old one. A motion to change banks was made by Wendy and seconded by Paula. Motion approved.
· Janie also suggested that with the change in officers, there is usually an audit of the treasurer’s books. Deborah has done this work before and volunteered to do this for us. Janie also submitted the 501-C report to Marilynn.
· Janie reminded members that there are still shirts and bags and one “Fun Places to Fly” book for sale.
New Business
· Mary Ellen Kyle memorial. We discussed the possibility of buying a brick for Amelia Earhardt’s home. Marjorie moved that we explore this possibility, Deborah seconded, the motion carried.
· A huge thank you to Marilynn Miller for serving our chapter as president this past year! Her gift of appreciation was several gift certificates to various fun places to eat, i.e. Red Lobster, Don Pablos, Olive Garden, and Appleby’s. We appreciate your contributions very much!
· Connie reported on a new fun place to fly. The Beaumont Hotel was established in 1879 in Beaumont, Kansas as a stagecoach and railroad stop. As the nation grew, so did aviation. In 1953, a 2400 foot North and South native grass strip was carved out of the prairie so airplanes could taxi right up to the Beaumont’s front door. A great place for dinner or as a bed and breakfast.
· Paula requests that we send suggestions for restaurants for us to experience prior to our meetings each month. Please email her with any new places.
· Our next meeting will be the annual picnic at Janie’s home. Email or phone Janie to let her know how many are to be there and which side dish you plan to bring. We will meet at 6:00 PM. Please let her know by Monday, August 12 if you’ll be there.
Adjournment: Marjorie moved to adjourn the meeting, Deborah seconded, motion carried.
Up, Up, and Away
Marjorie flew commercial to New Hampshire and to Washington, D.C., for business.
Paula and Hal flew the Traveler (N9514L) to Bozeman, Monatana, and back. Our route on the way out was through South Dakota, where we “overnighted” in Mitchell (home of the Corn Palace) and Spearfish. Total mileage was 1,380 SM. On the way back, we took a northern route (1,840 SM) flying over Montana’s Yogo Gulch (where the sapphires in my rings were mined!). Since we’re currently reading Undaunted Courage, about the Lewis and Clark expedition, we chose to take their route backwards, following the Missouri River from north of Lewistown, past Fort Peck Lake to Lake Sakakawea, where the river turns south. Homebound overnights were in Grand Forks, ND, and Manistique, MI. No significant weather the entire trip!
Connie and Ray flew to San Antonio, TX, via Wichita, KS, with 3 granddaughters, to meet a Japanese friend. The trip was slow—strong headwinds out and no help from the winds on the way back. Ray and I got to work on the Cessna AW on the way back home.
Betty flew some in Florida. I took my granddaughter home. She spent a week at the B-WISER (Buckeye Women in Science, Engineering, and Research) Camp, in Wooster, OH. The aviation section got a 100% outstanding grade in the evaluations. All the girls got to fly!!!
