Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s July 14, 2004 meeting

Up, Up, and Away

Joanne Austin and Glenn Sproat flew his Mooney to EYE (north of Indianapolis) to meet friends who were flying to Hawaii. Joanne has completed her WINGS in the Mooney. Bi-annual is complete in a complex plane. Yea!

It wasn’t “UP”, but Kay and Norm Hoelting just returned from a 7000 mile trip in their RV through the Canadian maritimes including Newfoundland and Labrador. They leave soon for another trip to Alaska with Kay driving the motor home and Norm and a friend riding their Gold Wing motorcycles. We should be back for the October meeting.

Connie and Ray Copeland flew to Minnesota for a week with all kids at Leech Lake in June. We helped son Matt get his Airstream on a clearing we had chopped out two years ago. We even planted some potatoes. (It’s a long story)

John and Charma Huddy flying commercially to Las Vegas July 18 for a week. We’ll be visiting the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and other attractions.

Terri and Tracy flew in the Grumman to Darke County Airport, Greenville, Ohio and visited Annie Oakley’s grave and a museum. A couple of very friendly pilots at Darke County gave Terri a copy of a World War Two Aces Logbook with some journal entries detailing some dog-fights he was in. Terri competed in the Henry Haigh Challenge Aerobatic contest in Jackson, Michigan in a Decathalon, second place in primary category.

Marjorie Anderson flew commercial to Chicago, LAX, San Francisco, Beijing, Hangzhou, China back to Beijing, LAX, Chicago, to Port Columbus. She studied for two weeks at a Traditional Chinese Medicine college. Had wonderful professional and personal experiences, including climbing the Great Wall to the second tower (much, much higher than six years ago).

Because I fly I laugh more than other women
I look up and see more than they, I know how the clouds feel,
What it's like to have the blue in my lap, to look down on birds,
to feel freedom in a thing called the stick... who but I can slice between God's
billowed legs, and feel then laugh and crash with His step
Who else has seen the unclimbed peaks? The rainbow's secret?
The real reason birds sing? Because I Fly, I envy no one on earth.
