Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s June 11, 2003 meeting
Up, Up, and Away
Joanne Austin and Glenn(49 ½) flew to Paxton, Illinois last Sunday in his Mooney. Great fun and fast flight. Now we are taking the windows out of his plane to replace them.
Brooke Hayes “finally” soloed on June 2nd from Delaware Municipal Airport. “It was one of these most exhilarating experiences of my life”, she says. “Now that I’ve made it over the hump, I’m hoping to progress quickly toward my ultimate goal…my private pilot’s license.
Janet Barnard reports, “I did my first flight totally flying from the right seat, take-offs, landings, no flap landings, and slips from Dayton Wright Brothers to Sporty’s and Lebanon-Warren County. It was fun and a good challenge to switch controls to opposite hands.”
Connie Copeland and Ray (49 ½) had a slow flight to Wichita for the River Festival in May. They went North to avoid thunderstorms and then had to fly south through a break. The return trip wasn’t as eventful. Their two oldest grandchildren announced they want to learn to fly. One has already started her ground school via books.

· Air Race Classic: The official timing clock and program arrived in the mail. Food: Joanne received a $10 donation and a $25 donation so far. She still needs fresh fruit and pastries for Monday morning. Donations are still welcome. Timing: Marilynn needs to know who’s available and for how long each day. Let her know which day you will be there and which hours. Myra, Jo-Ann, Jim Prater (49 ½ ), Mary Biller, Brooke Hayes, and Paula Hook have all volunteered as timers. Flight Service: Kay will have OASIS workstations available for the ARC. She needs to establish busiest times for staffing of these stations.
· Janie requested a donation of cookies from Cheryl’s Cookies. Organizations may buy a case of 120 cookies for $40 if done prior to two weeks before the event. Marilynn moved and Marjorie seconded to buy the case of cookies. Motion approved.
· Vests with 99s insignia: Janie has a sample of the vest with insignia on it. Our cost will be $39.50. If the compass rose is on both sides, there is an extra $5. The company will need 10-14 days to complete. There is also the possibility of short ankle socks with the insignia on them. We would need to purchase a minimum of 72 pair at $5.50 each pair. Vests are in multiple colors with a block 99 on the back.
· Dues: Local chapter dues are now past due. Please remit to Janie as soon as possible.
· Dana created a poster display for use at the OSU Airport Open House and for any other activities. It is laminated for multiple use functions. Marjorie and Marilynn Miller agreed to assist in staffing the booth. Join us at Hanger One, Table 8.
· Raton Airmarking Compass Rose: Jim Prater flew over the compass rose and states, “It still looks great!” The owners of the FBO are very pleased.
· Terri reports the chapter was unable to complete the flying activities planned last weekend due to thunderstorms. If interested in a group to see Tecumseh, please let her know. There is a flight planned to July 13 for lunch at Blue Bird. July 11 – 13 is the annual blimp meet at the Dayton AFB.
