Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s November 10, 2004 meeting

Up, Up, and Away

Janie and Woody left for Florida on October 31 in their Bonanza at 9:30 am, even with a fairly negative weather briefing from flight service. But then again, aren't they usually? They were forecasting 20-40 knots of headwind and rainshowers in TN on our flight path. And since it was still election time, a TFR around Gainesville for 4:15-6:00 for President Bush. However, we were surprised by some good ground speeds, only a few clouds over the mountains, little moderate turbulence, and no rain showers. We crossed the mountains at 8500'. We landed at our fuel stop, Anderson, SC at 11:00 am. which was about halfway and just over the last of the mountains.
We requested flight following and were doing well until we were asked to switch to Jacksonville. We had a hard time getting them to respond initially, but finally got them. Then they lost their radar and had to contact everyone and give them new routes, what a mess!
We were successful in getting around Gainesville before the TFR went into affect, fortunately, and landed in Ocala at 3:00 pm. Not a bad trip, 5 1/2 hours sure does beat driving for 15 hours!
We had the airplane packed so full we could barely get all of it into the small compact car we rented to get us to our home in The Villages.
