Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s November 12, 2008 meeting
Up, Up, and Away
Paula R. took a colleague sightseeing over Ohio recently. Lani was the high
bidder on a United Way flying tour donation. She was thrilled with the ride, and
they had a lot of laughs and pretty fall scenery.
Jann and George flew to Port Clinton for Sunday brunch at Mon Ami. On the flight
home, they took a spin over the off-shore islands.
Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by Jann Bowne.
Attendance: Teresa Freeman, Marjorie Anderson, Constance Copeland, Fleda
Anderson, Myra Jamison, Marilynn Miller, Paula Hook, Dawn Valasco, Paula
Rumbaugh, Charma Huddy, Jann Bowne, Lori Robishaw
Minutes of Previous Meeting: The minutes of the October meeting were
approved as distributed.
Treasurer’s Report: Paula Hook gave the treasurer’s
report. Charma Huddy asked about the remaining Ohio quarters from the last
Section meeting that we hosted, and the chapter determined that they should be
turned back in to the treasury.
Report of Standing Committees:
- Scholarship:
Paula Rumbaugh reported that she and the committee had distributed
flyers to local airports with information about the Alice Jackson Scholarship,
including OSU, Marysville, Delaware, and Bolton. She also placed one on the
community bulletin board at Whole Foods. Regarding the new Chad Countiss
Scholarship, it will be used for primary training. She had received no
inquiries yet, and urged members of the chapter to apply. While the
application asks for 10 hours of flight training, it also allows for a waiver
if the applicant has been active with the chapter. Carol Countiss, who is
providing the scholarship, has asked to be present when the scholarship is
awarded.
Old Business:
- North Central Section Meeting:
• Jann and Paula H. attended the meeting
in Newark, Ohio. Attendance included 17 chapters and 64 individual members.
Sadly, only a few of our aprons and mugs were sold. Section keynote speakers
included several authors who had written books about aviation.
• Paula encouraged members who were active
pilots to apply for the annual Spinning Prop Award.
- Next year’s Section Meetings schedule:
• March 27-29 in Milwaukee
• July 22-26 in Chicago; annual
International Conference hosted by North Central Section (Paula suggested we
could drive to Waterloo, Indiana, and take the train into Chicago); one of the
post-conference tours is to Oshkosh
• Late October in Michigan
- Flying Companion (Right Seat) Seminar
• Jann spoke with Dick Wetherald,
president of EAA Chapter 9, about jointly sponsoring a flying companion
seminar next spring. It was suggested that our chapter provide the ground
school (Amy and Paula R. have done before), and we ask EAA9 to provide the
flight instructors. The seminar is intense; usually two days and one evening
or half-day. Weather is a factor, and we should have a minimum number of
participants in order to make it financially worthwhile. We will have to look
into the costs of insurance through The 99s HQ as it was believed to have gone
up since the last time we did it. It was also thought that SOPs exist for it,
and we will need to find and follow them.
New Business:
- Members were asked to sign up to host meetings for next year.
- The holiday party list was passed around; those who weren’t present at the
meeting are asked to contact Mary to see what to bring and to give her your
RSVP. Everyone attending should also bring six dozen cookies to be distributed
to local towers and FBOs.
- As in the past, it was decided that in lieu of a chapter gift exchange
that members are encouraged to make a donation to the International Health
Service in support of Jo-Ann and Jim Prater’s annual trip to Honduras. Members
can make out their checks to the Scioto Valley 99s for the amount they would
have spent on the gift exchange (typically $15).
Announcements:
- Myra went out to join the Praters at Casa del Gavilan in New Mexico;
Jo-Ann reported that the owners have to close it down for the winter. Their
innkeeper is retiring in January, and Jo-Ann and Jim are likely to go out
there so that the place is occupied until it reopens in the spring.
- Lori encouraged members to think about potential nominations for the three
99s Awards that are presented each year at the annual International
Conference. They are: the Award of Achievement, the Award of Merit, and the
George Palmer Putnam Award. She will send out an e-mail with more details. The
deadline for nominations is January 15.
Adjournment: The meeting was adjourned, and members enjoyed a
beautiful cake in honor of Marilynn’s 87th birthday.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori Robishaw, Secretary
