Minutes of the Scioto Valley 99s September 10, 2008 meeting
Up, Up, and Away
Marjorie assisted in registration for Young Eagles (EAA Chapter 27) at the
Delaware Air Show and also at the sales table for our chapter.
Janie and Woody have done some local flying and helped at the Delaware Municipal
Airport.
Paula R. and Hal spent two weeks in Namibia in southern Africa on a camping
“safari.” They had wonderful experiences and saw beautiful scenery and
fascinating and exciting wildlife (including lions!). After returning to Ohio
for rest (!), they flew locally in N9514L for the $100 cup of coffee at Mt.
Victory.
Jann went again to Illinois to watch her granddaughter. Her plane is now a
familiar visitor at CPS (St. Louis Downtown Airport).
Lori had all sorts of aviation adventures in Alaska as part of the International
Conference. First, a cruise from Vancouver with stops in Ketchikan (first
floatplane ride), Juneau (first helicopter ride onto a glacier), Skagway, and
Sitka. Then from Anchorage in a Navaho with 9 other 99s to see Denali from
12,500 feet! Wildlife seen were bears, moose, caribou, whales, sea otters, sea
lions, and eagles. And then her commercial flight back from Anchorage was
delayed four days due to a volcanic ash cloud that got in the way of the flight
path. All in all, quite an adventure.
Meeting Minutes
The meeting was called to order by Jann Bowne.
Attendance: Marjorie Anderson, Myra Jamison, Constance Copeland, Joan
Mace, Gail Dean, Janie McIntire, Paula Rumbaugh, Jann Bowne, Paula Hook, Lori
Robishaw.
Minutes of Previous Meeting: Amy Yersavich had trouble with the
September meeting notice and August minutes on her computer so some members
weren’t able to get them. A printed copy was passed around and the minutes were
accepted as printed.
Treasurer’s Report: Paula Hook gave the treasurer’s
report.
Report of Standing Committees:
- Scholarship:
Paula Rumbaugh is the new chair for the committee and reported that
she was still waiting to hear from Carol Countiss as to the status of our new
scholarship proposal in memory of her late husband, Chad. Carol had indicated
an interest in having a little more info about Chad in the materials, and
Paula was going to draft something for Carol to consider. There was discussion
about providing additional information about Alice Jackson in the materials
for the scholarship in her name as well. Members were uncertain if Alice was
the first female balloon pilot in Ohio and didn’t know if she had any family
left in the area with whom we could check. Connie Copeland thought she had met
her husband, who worked at Chemical Abstracts, while she was learning to fly a
balloon and that they had gotten married in a balloon.
Old Business:
- Janie McIntire reported further on the Delaware Air Show and noted that an
estimated 3-3,500 people were in attendance over the weekend. The city was
very happy with the event and the EAA Chapter 27 that hosted it got a nice
proclamation from the city council. The chapter also flew 99 Young Eagles.
- Fall Section Meeting, October 10-12 in Newark, Ohio.
• All information and registration
materials were in the “Waypoint” online; it was noted that the early
registration deadline had passed.
• Paula H. is staying for the weekend and
looking for a roommate for Friday and Saturday nights. We asked for a table to
sell our mugs and aprons at the Fly Mart, and members are needed to work at
the table and help sell. Anyone going should let her know.
• Marjorie Anderson has a beautiful AOPA
leather satchel to raffle off, and a man from the Delaware Air Show will
donate a model airplane for us to raffle. We will need a sign for the raffle
items.
- Paula H. passed around a newspaper from Ft. Wayne that had an article
about Margaret Ringenberg’s passing away at Oshkosh. The story told how she
was carried in an antique hearse during her funeral procession and passed
Smith Field where she flew and a Cessna 172 fly-over was flown in tribute to
her.
New Business:
- Gail Dean said she had talked to Marilynn Miller who said hello and
encouraged anyone coming down to the Blue Ash fly-in to stop by. Gail also
gave details on the October tower tour.
- Gail also said that Warren Field would like information on us for the
Bolton newsletter and Lori Robishaw said she’d do it if Gail could find out
the deadline and word limit.
Announcements:
- Marilynn’s new address and phone number were given out.
- Janie noted that there was a good article in the latest issue of AOPA
Pilot magazine about the new ELTs, which is a significant and expensive issue
for all airplane owners.
Adjournment: Meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
Lori Robishaw, Secretary
